How to work with the item and map picker
The item picker is designed to allow you to easily select one or more items within Alloy. Where items can have geometry and appear on the map then the item picker also provides you with the option to use a map picker. For items that are configured so that they can be placed in one or other collection you can also search for items by changing collections.
Using the item picker
The item picker appears when you select an entry field that requires one or more items on the system to be selected, for example when creating defects, jobs or inspections.
By default the item picker displays a list of items in numeric and alphabetical order. You can scroll through the list and select one or more items.
When you have selected all the items you require select Save to return to the selection field, the number of items is indicated in the field.
Searching the list
The item picker provides you with a search field that allows you to either find an item directly or reduce the list of items. You can enter all or part of an item title or sub-title to filter the list down to include the item or items that you require.
Enter your search term and select the button to initiate the search. You can then make your selection.
Searching other collections
By default the item picker displays a list of items in the Live collection. Where the item type can be found in more than one collection you can change the collection your search can be changed by selecting the button, when it is displayed.
The design for the items must be configured for multiple collections for this option to be available.
When you select the collection picker a dialog is displayed allowing you to select an alternative collection for the item search.
Select the collection you require and the item picker displays the items available in that collection.
Using the map picker
In addition to the simple list, where items can have geometry the item picker provides you the option to use a map picker that allows you to find and select items from the map. To access the map picker select the button if it is displayed.
The map picker is centred on area you were looking at in the main map and uses the same basemap. It displays all the assets that have geometry and you have access to in the map picker window.
The map picker displays a map area centred on the main map. It uses the same basemap as the main map. All visible assets that occur within the map area are displayed by default. You can pan and zoom the map, however, you will need to use the Search here button to refresh the screen and display more assets if you move away from the original location.
The map tools can be used to zoom in and out of the map and select one or more assets contained within the map window.
You can select a group of items using the draw area tool. This allows you to draw a marquee around the icons that you want to select.
When you have completed the marquee select the Show selected items tool to view a list of the selected items in the items panel on the right.
You can deselect any items you do not want to include by selecting the icon for each item.
The items panel lists all the assets that are displayed on the map by default, in numeric and alphabetical order. You can scroll through the list and select one or more items that you wan to work with. When you filter a list or the selected items then they will appear in the items panel.
The search field allows you to locate a specific item within the list or by using a partial entry in the field to reduce the number of items displayed within the list, for example entering
CBL17 displays only the items starting with that string. At the same time the number of items on the map is reduced to the list of items.
Search here button
When you pan or zoom the map you should use this button to refresh the items that are visible in the new map display, as well as updating the list in the items panel. If you filter the items by design you need to use this button to refresh the display.
The map picker has a set of tools that allow you to manage the display and selection of the items that you want to within the map.
You can access the map picker tools using the more button.
- Back to picker - this closes the map picker and returns you to the item picker. Selected items are maintained.
- Clear selection - this clears all the selected items.
- Filter designs - this allows you to filter the display of items by selecting a design that items are associated with, for example, Sign illuminations will filter out all items except sign illumination items. When you have selected a design select Search here to refresh the map.
To return the display of all the items you need to deselect the designs you used to filter the display and selecting Search here.
- Show all items - this allows you to list all the items in within the window if you filtered the list to display only selected items. If you filtered the display of items by design, this displays the all the filtered items in the items panel.

- Zoom to selection - this allows you to zoom the view of the map to the location of the selected item or items.

Then number of selected items and the total number of items on the map are displayed on the right.
When you have finished selecting items use the Done button to close the map picker and transfer your selections to the entry field.
