Overview

Alloy includes the function to clone items, which allows you to create multiple items with similar settings quickly and efficiently. You can customise how an item is cloned, for example, if you clone an item with components you can include or exclude any component items.

Cloning an item

To clone an item use the following procedure:

  1. Select an item to view its details in the Item details panel.
  2. In the Item details panel, the General page is displayed by default.
  3. Select the more actions button from the action bar.

  1. Select Clone item. The Item clone process page is displayed on the left.

    There are four steps listed:

    • Enter item details (mandatory)
    • Child link settings (optional)
    • Parent links settings (optional)
    • Item location (optional)

By default all the steps have been completed as part of the process. If you select Clone at this stage without making any changes, then you create an exact copy of the originally selected item. The new item has a unique Item ID, however, all other settings within the item are copied based on the default settings. This includes cloning any linked components and linking to any Live items that are not components such as links.

Entering item details

The first step allows you to change the mandatory item details, which have been copied from the original item. Editing these details may be desirable in order to generate a new item title and differentiate the cloned item from the original, for example a different unit number.

Note

The details that you can edit vary depending on the original item that you are cloning. You can also change the Collection that the cloned item belongs to.

When you have completed editing the mandatory details select Done to return to the Item clone process page.

The second step allows you to manage the child link settings for the cloned item. The settings that are displayed are the graph types related to the item.

Selecting a code displays a dialog with three possible settings:

  • Ignore - this will unset the attributes on the graph when cloning.
  • Keep - this will link the attributes on the graph to the same item(s) as the original item.
  • Clone - this will also clone the items being linked to, for attributes on the graph.

Default settings are included for the most relevant codes, for example, components are set to be cloned, however, defects, jobs and inspections are set to be ignored. The codes without any values are processed by Alloy with default settings. You can change these if required.

The third step allows you to manage the parent link settings for the cloned item. You can choose modes of setting parent links based on graph codes. By default there are no settings and processed by Alloy to exclude parent links.

Selecting a code displays a dialog with two possible settings:

  • Ignore - this will not link the newly cloned item to parents on that graph (default).
  • Keep - this will link parents on the same graph to the cloned item.

Item location

The fourth step allows you to edit the location or the shape of the cloned item, see Editing item geometry for more information on how to edit geometry.

When you have completed editing the geometry details select Next to return to the Item clone process page.
