OS support policy
Google typically releases a major Android version each year. However, your device manufacturer is responsible for making it available on your device. The eligibility and timescales for Android updates vary greatly! Most Android devices are sold with the promise of software updates for a set number of years.
Apple typically releases a major iOS version each year, which immediately becomes available on all supported iPhones and iPads. Each model receives software updates for a minimum of five years, with many still receiving updates several years later.
Once a device is no longer supported, it will remain on the same OS version for the rest of its lifespan.
Supporting the latest OS
Before a major new OS version is released, a beta version is made available for app developers to test. The development required to support the latest OS version depends on the nature of the changes it introduces. For example, UI changes may be fairly straightforward to adopt, but storage or communication changes may require substantial reworking of things behind-the-scenes.
When a beta OS version is made available, we will assess the required development and provide an indication of when the new OS will be supported by Alloy Mobile.
Deprecating older OS versions
As we provide support for new operating systems, it's important that we phase out support for older versions. Supporting older OS versions not only carries security risks, it can sometimes block development on newer OS versions, inhibiting our ability to deliver a high quality experience on modern devices.
Therefore, along with our expected timeline for new OS support, we'll also give notice of when we intend to deprecate older versions.
Google typically provides security updates for the latest three Android versions. Therefore, we also aim to support those three Android versions, e.g. when we announce support for Android 15, we will deprecate Android 12.
On Apple devices, the upgrade path to the latest iOS is much easier. Apple typically supports the latest two iOS versions. Therefore, we also aim to support those two iOS versions.
To be clear, Alloy Mobile won't immediately stop working when an OS version is deprecated! However, we will no longer be able to provide support for any technical issues you may encounter (and the chances of encountering such issues will grow over time).
